Fira village

Fira

Fira is the capital of the island of Santorini, built in a unique place with steep cliffs, white cubic houses built next to each other, creating countless land levels, hanging vertically on the cliffs. Due to the volcanic origin of the island, the coast is steep and not suitable for swimming.

The intense tourist visit pushed the expansion of the settlement, removing a bit of its traditional character.

The old harbor of Santorini is below Fira, in the past the ascent was made with donkeys or on foot by the 250 stairs. Today there is also a cable car connecting Fira with the old port.
